Kayla Antoine recorded 19 points and 13 rebounds while
Olivia Falvey added 14 points and nine boards, but Sewanee was unable to overcome a slow start and dropped a 70-61 decision at LaGrange College on Sunday in the SAA-CCS Challenge in LaGrange, Ga.
The Tigers (0-2) trailed 15-4 after one quarter but kept pace with the Panthers the remainder of the game, pulling within five with just over three minutes left before halftime and five again in the third period.
Sewanee scored the first seven points of the final period thanks to a pair of layups by Falvey, then two free throws from
Faith Humphrey and 1-of-2 at the foul line by Falvey, pulling the Tigers within 53-51 with 7:07 remaining. Sewanee did not score for the next two minutes, with LaGrange putting together a 6-0 spurt during the drought, and the Panthers never looked back from there.
Baskets by Zyhia Johnson and Kendra Roberts and two free throws from Skylar Edwards were part of the 6-0 run and a 3-pointer by Roberts and a jumper from Johnson stretched the lead to 11 with just over three minutes to play.
Sewanee made runs in each quarter after the slow start, but LaGrange had an answer each time.
After making just 2-of-13 from the field in the first quarter, the Tigers connected on 8-for-17 shots in the second period. Humphrey posted a 3-pointer and two layups plus one free throw by
Cydney Wright kept the visitors within eight. Antoine added back-to-back field goals and two foul shots by Humphrey pulled Sewanee within five at 26-21 with 3:23 left in the half.
The Panthers got 3-pointers from Ema Turner and Britney Chavez and Johnson netted the final four points of the half via a layup and two free throws for a 37-25 lead for the home team at intermission.
Falvey registered the first six points for the Tigers in the third quarter and a 3-pointer and a layup by
Shay Conn again pulled Sewanee within five. Laila Battle collected a layup and an old-fashioned 3-point play for the Panthers and layups by Amanda McLendon and Battle stretched the LaGrange lead to 50-36.
Antoine and Humphrey each posted two foul shots and Wright's layup were all part of a 6-0 run by the Tigers.
Lilly Phillips added two free throws as well for Sewanee, but Taylor Smith's two points at the charity stripe with two seconds left in the quarter gave the Panthers a 53-44 edge headed to the final 10 minutes.
Humphrey finished with 11 points and Wright netted 10 for the Tigers, who made only 2-of-15 from behind the arc in the contest. Smith paced the Panthers with 15 points, while Battle scored 11 and Johnson recorded 10. Roberts added nine and McLendon tallied eight points and 12 rebounds.
Sewanee travels to Berea College this Wednesday for a 5 p.m. CT contest and opens the home schedule next weekend, taking on LaGrange on Friday at 5 p.m. and Covenant College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
