Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. (Feb. 21, 2016) – Earlham held off a late ninth inning rally by the Sewanee baseball team, Sunday, as the host team earned a 4-3 win over the Tigers at Sandler Stadium.
Sewanee dropped to 0-12 this season while Earlham opened its season with a 3-0 record after the three-game series sweep.
After both teams scored a run in the first, Earlham took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third as Brandon Smalling drove in Thomas Rea with an RBI ground out to second.
The Tigers eventually answered back as Drew Mancuso continued his strong weekend with an RBI single with one out in the top of the eighth.
Unfortunately, Earlham responded with two runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning.
Down by two heading into the final frame, the first two Tiger batters were quickly retired. Down to their final out, Derek Hullings singled. He advanced to second after a Tyler Minkkinen single. A batter later, Jackson Cooper drove in Hullings and put Minkkinen in scoring position.
However, Earlham's winning pitcher Walter Talcott got Ryan Poole swing to end the threat and game.
On the mound, Sewanee reliever Harrison Lee was charged with the loss after he gave up three runs on four hits in 5.1 innings of work. Additionally, Lee struck out seven hitters.
At the plate, Mancuso along with Cooper and Poole all three finished with three hits.
Cather Cody Krumlauf led Earlham with a 2-for-4 performance.
Sewanee returns to action with a three-game Southern Athletic Association (SAA) home series against Berry, Saturday.
