Box Score JACKSON, Miss. (Feb. 27, 2015) – Playing Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Berry for the second time this week, the Sewanee women's basketball team fell just short in the conference tournament, 67-64, Friday, on the campus of Millsaps College.
Sewanee closed out its season with an even 12-12 record. Berry moves into the SAA semifinals with a 17-8 record.
Sewanee started the game strong with a quick 5-0 run. The Tigers eventually led by eight, 19-11, with 7:54 left in the first half after Casey Hassett made a layup. Berry would answer back with a 9-0 run to take a 20-19 lead less than three minutes later.
The Vikings would then close the half a 7-2 spurt.
In the second half, Sewanee answered back. The Tigers outscored the Vikings 14-9 over the first four minutes to pull to within one, 36-35. After a three by Chanlir Segarra, Sewanee tied the game with jumpers from Jamie Chauvin and Rebekah Faulkner.
Over the next five minutes, the score would remain tight. Sewanee retook the lead at 53-52 when Faulkner and Chauvin both scored.
Berry responded with a 5-0 run after scores by Megan Casey and Valerie Mclure. Down by three, 62-59, with 18 seconds left, Kayla Sewell made a layup. After two Segarra free throws, Sewell then hit a three with 11 seconds to play.
The Tigers would have one final chance to tie the game with eights second remaining. Unfortunately, Sewanee could not get a three-point attempt up before time expired.
Overall, Sewanee dominated inside by outscoring Berry 36-8 in the paint. The Vikings were able to keep the game close with 10 three pointers.
Individually, Hassett led Sewanee with 17 points. Sewell also played well with an incredible 12-point, 17-rebound double-double. In fact, Sewell finished her Sewanee career with 915 rebounds, 249 blocks, 143 steals, 221 assists, and 807 points. Her 915 rebounds rank third all-time while her blocks, steals, and assists are also among the program's best.
Friday marked the final game for Sewell and McKenzie Jones.
