Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 9, 2015) – Despite holding one of the top offensive players in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) to just nine points, the Sewanee women's basketball team dropped a 40-36 contest against Millsaps, Friday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
The loss is the Tigers third straight, which drops Sewanee to 7-4 overall and 0-2 in league play. Despite the winless SAA record, Sewanee has now lost two straight SAA contests by combined eight points.
The game was close throughout with seven lead changes and three ties. Neither team led by more than eight points the entire contest.
After a Rebekah Faulkner jumper with 5:06 left in the first half pushed Sewanee ahead by one, 15-14, Millsaps went on a small run. The Majors scored six straight points to lead at the half, 20-15.
Millsaps would stretch its lead to seven with 17:45 to play, however two straight jumpers by Jamie Chauvin pulled Sewanee to within a possession.
With 3:24 remaining, Sewanee was down by eight, 38-30, before the Tigers rallied back. A jumper by Chauvin, and a layup by Hannah McCormack, cut the deficit to four. Casey Hassett then made a layup to pull Sewanee to within two, 38-36, with 27 seconds to play.
Sewanee would have a chance to tie or take the lead with the clock ticking down. However, a late offensive foul with a second left set up two Velvet Johnson free throws to close the game.
Overall, Sewanee limited Millsaps to a 32.6 field goal percentage. That included holding Johnson to only nine points on 3-of-17 shooting. In fact, no Millsaps player scored in double figures.
Chauvin led the Tigers with a game-high 14 points. Kayla Sewell also played well overall with seven points, 12 rebounds, three assists, and four blocks.
Sewanee continues SAA play with a 1:00 p.m. contest against rival Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.
