Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. (April 12, 2014) – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) member Millsaps opened its three-game series with the Sewanee baseball team with a pair of victories, Saturday, at Twenty Field.
The Majors won the first game 9-1 and then topped the Tigers by a 7-2 score in the nightcap.
Behind outstanding pitching from Smokey Ethridge and Zander Romano, Millsaps took advantage of 15 strikeouts while limiting Sewanee to just seven hits.
Millsaps opened with three runs in the first and another in the second, before Sewanee came back with its lone run in the top of the third.
Zack Sutton drove in the Tigers' one RBI when outfielder Ben Clune crossed the plate off a single to center.
Unfortunately, Millsaps responded with one run in the bottom of the fourth and four runs in the sixth.
Overall, Nate Barnett led the Tigers with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate. Sutton and Jackson Cooper also finished with multiple hits.
Starter Alex Mockett took the loss after he allowed five runs (only two earned) in 4.2 innings of work.
In the second game, Millsaps was again paced by its outstanding pitching. Starter Keith Shumaker earned the complete game win. Shumaker allowed 10 hits, while limiting Sewanee to just two runs.
Ahead 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Millsaps busted the game open with four more runs. With one out, Millsaps took advantage of a Tiger error. On the play, Millsaps would score one run and send two more runners into scoring position. A batter later, Logan Patterson then reached on a squeeze play that was set up by the previous Sewanee miscue. Stephen Gates then drove in another run with a deep SAC fly.
Sewanee would threaten in the top of the seventh, however Nate Barnett hit into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded.
Jack Whaley finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Barnett doubled and drove in one.
Sewanee and Millsaps will wrap up their series with a noon game, Sunday.
