Box Score ATLANTA (March 13, 2014) – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Oglethorpe opened its three-game series with a 6-5 win over the Sewanee baseball team Thursday at Anderson Field.
The Tigers opened the game by scoring a run in the top of the first. Ben Clune opened the game with a walk. After Oglethorpe got the next two Sewanee batters out, Zack Sutton advanced Clune to second with a single to right. A batter later, Nate Barnett ripped another pitch into right field to score Clune.
The score would stay at 1-0, until the Tiger offense came alive again in the top of the third. After a Grant Goodson single, the junior shortstop stole second. Clune then reached on an error by the Oglethorpe shortstop. On the throw, Goodson would round third and score.
A batter later, Jack Whaley scored Clune from third with a ground out to second.
Unfortunately, the Stormy Petrels bounded back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own.
After OU tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, Michael Walker opened the top of the sixth with a single. Walker then stole second.
Three batters later, pitch hitter Gus Myer hit a deep fly ball to center that scored Walker. On the ensuing play, the Tigers added another run on a wild pitch by David Langhan.
Like they did earlier in the game, OU rallied back in the bottom of the inning. The Stormy Petrels would score three runs with two outs.
Overall, Sewanee finished with six hits while OU added eight. Whaley, Barnett, and Myer led the offense with a hit each and one RBI.
On the mound, Mike O'Neil picked up the loss after he gave up six runs (three earned) and seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
OU reliever David Langhan picked up the win while Patrick Kulick earned his third save this season. Both pitchers combined to striking out seven Tigers while allowing no runs in the 4.0 innings.
Sewanee and Oglethorpe continue their series with a doubleheader, Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (EST).
