Box Score HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 22, 2014) – A strong first half helped Wittenberg to a 13-7 win over the Sewanee men's lacrosse team, Saturday, at Pope John Paul II High School in Hendersonville, Tenn.
With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 1-1 on the season. Wittenberg is now 1-0 after its first match.
Early on, Wittenberg used its attack to power past Sewanee in the opening 30 minutes. The Tigers led 7-0 at halftime.
In the third period, Sewanee finally got on the board when freshman George Bukawyn scored off an assist from senior Michael Morris.
Unfortunately, Wittenberg scored six additional goals in the third to lead 12-1 with 1:05 remaining.
Freshman Matthew Stiefel finally sparked a Sewanee scoring run with a goal to end the third.
The Tigers then opened the fourth with goals by Bukawyn, Stiefel, and two by Morris, to pull to within five, 12-7, with 6:55 remaining.
Moments later, it looked like Sewanee scored again, however Morris's attempt was not ruled a goal, despite it looking like it went through the top of the net.
On the ensuing ground ball, Wittenberg responded with a goal by Jordan Shoger.
Overall, Sewanee outshot Wittenberg 43-40. The Tigers also finished with 42 groundballs and 11 face-off wins.
Individually, Bukawyn finished with three goals on seven shots. Morris and Stiefel added two goals and at least one assist.
Andrew Fuss and Shoger led Wittenberg with three goals apiece. Will Stocker and Thomas Fuss also had a multiple-goal match.
After being the home team in two neutral site contests, Sewanee will play its first match at Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium on March 2. That match between the Tigers and Kenyon is scheduled to start 1:00 p.m.
