Box Score 2 SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 22, 2014) – After pounding out a combined 24 hits, the Sewanee baseball team stayed unbeaten with a pair of victories over visiting Earlham, Saturday, at Montgomery Field.
The Tigers are now a perfect 4-0 this season, after back-to-back doubleheader sweeps.
Game 1 – Sewanee 9 Earlham 2
After the Quakers scored a run in the top of the first, Sewanee responded when Jack Rogers drove in Tony Dykes and Ben Clune.
An inning later, Dykes added a pair of RBI with a two-out single. Michael Walker then ripped a two-RBI triple that pushed Sewanee's lead to 6-1.
After Earlham got a run in the top of the third, the Tigers stayed hot at the plate in the bottom of the fourth.
With one out, Walker and Zack Sutton had back-to-back singles. After Rogers advanced both runners into scoring position, Jackson Cooper doubled which extended the lead.
A batter later, Nate Barnett added another Sewanee run when he singled off of Earlham starter Matt Brankle.
Overall, Sewanee finished with 16 hits and nine RBI.
On the mound, starter Charles Warren improved to 2-0 this season. Warren allowed only two earned runs in 6.0 innings of work. Warren also allowed only seven hits while striking out four.
Relievers Ben Harrison, Jared Davenport, and Adam Schmidt combined to throw 3.0 scoreless innings.
Game 2 – Sewanee 3 Earlham 2
The Tigers got on the board first, when Blake Bays scored Sutton on a SAC fly.
An inning later, Sutton drove in a RBI with a single with two outs.
Earlham would eventually tie the score at 2-2 after the Quakers scored in the top of the fourth and seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sewanee opened the inning by taking advantage of an Earlham error. After Rogers reached on the miscue, the sophomore from Atlanta advanced to second.
Two batters later, with two outs, junior Grant Goodson hit a groundball to short. However, on the play, Earlham shortstop Thomas Rea could not handle the ball, allowing Rogers to score the walk-off run.
On the mound, Marshall Ussery pitched well for Sewanee. The Tiger starter allowed only one run and four hits in 4.0 innings of work. Reliever Alex Mockett earned the win after he tossed 3.0 innings while allowing only one run and striking out one.
Sewanee and Earlham will conclude their three-game series with a noon contest, Sunday.
