Box Score ROANOKE, Va. (Dec. 7, 2014) – With a 60-55 win at Roanoke, Sunday, the Sewanee women's basketball team is off to its best start since the 2005-06 season.
The Tigers are now 6-1 overall. Additionally, Sewanee swept its first road weekend series since the 2004-05 campaign.
Both teams got off to a slow start with the first field goal coming by Roanoke at the 16:59 mark. The Tigers finally got on the board when Savannah Rose made a three. Two possessions later, Sewanee took its first lead when freshman guard Kelley Myers hit another three. That made the score, 6-4.
Both teams would then trade scores over the next five minutes. With 9:13 remaining in the first half, forward Haley McDonough hit a jumper to push Sewanee ahead by three, 13-10. That would open a 21-8 run for the Tigers the final eight minutes of the half.
Down 16, 34-18, to start the second half, Roanoke scored the first eight points out of the locker room.
Eventually the Maroons would to pull to within six points, 38-31, after two Cary Beahm free throws.
However, Sewanee answered back with a pair of Rebekah Faulkner free throws. That opened an 11-2 run by the Tigers.
Down the stretch, Roanoke kept battling back. A jumper by Meghan Gadell and a three by Bridget Holleran cut the Maroons' deficit to four, 55-51, with 2:44 to play.
After a free throw by Jamie Chauvin, Holleran made a layup that cut the Sewanee lead to a possession. However, a key layup by Faulkner with 24 seconds remaining gave the Tigers a 58-53 advantage.
McCormack then sealed the win for Sewanee with two free throws with six seconds left.
Overall, Sewanee was outshot and outrebounded by Roanoke. However, the Tigers forced 15 Maroon turnovers and finished with 24 points from their reserves.
Individually, Myers scored a career-high 14 points on four three-point field goals and a pair of two free throws. Fellow freshman Faulkner also added 10 points, her second straight game with double digit scoring.
Guard Chauvin led all Tigers with a team-high 15 points while senior forward Kayla Sewell grabbed 14 rebounds and added five blocks.
Beahm led all players and Roanoke with a game-high 17 points. Gadell pitched in 12 points while Holleran added 10.
Sewanee will close out its semester with a 6:00 p.m. (EST) contest at Covenant, Tuesday.
