Box Score ATLANTA (Dec. 2, 2014) – Regional-rival Emory handed the Sewanee women's basketball team its first defeat of the season, as the host Eagles topped the Tigers, 68-45, inside the Woodruff P.E. Center.
Sewanee is now 4-1 this season while the Eagles improved to 4-2.
Neither team started off well. Kennede Miller made the first shot of the game for Emory at the 16:44 mark.
Sewanee would finally get on the scoreboard two minutes later, as Kayla Sewell's three sparked an 8-0 Tiger run.
During the stretch, freshman Rebekah Faulkner and Sewell paced Sewanee.
Unfortunately, Emory responded back when Khadijah Sayyid's three-point play opened a 17-3 run by the Eagles.
Eventually, Emory would take a 13-point lead, 31-18, into halftime.
The Eagles would then add to their advantage out of the locker room. Layups by Sayyid and Miller made the score 35-21 in favor of Emory with 18:21 to play.
Two threes by Savannah Rose and another by Haley Lyerly cut the Sewanee deficit to 16, 44-28, four minutes later.
With 10:10 remaining, Faulkner would pull the Tigers to within 18, 51-33, after Emory scored seven straight points.
The Eagles would then add another 7-0 run to stretch their lead to 25. The score would remain around that margin the final six minutes.
Overall, the Tigers struggled from the field making only 31.2 percent of their shots. Sewanee also finished with a season-high 27 turnovers.
Tuesday also marked the first time Sewanee has not scored at least 60 points.
Individually, Rose led the Tigers with 12 points while Sewell pitched in 10 rebounds.
Kaniut led all scorers with a game-high 19 points. Sayyid also added 15 points for the Eagles while Michelle Bevan added 11.
Sewanee continues its December road-trip with 2:00 p.m. contest at Hollins, Saturday.
