Box Score CONWAY, Ark. (Nov. 7, 2014) – The Sewanee volleyball team's season came to an end Friday afternoon, as the Tigers dropped their Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament quarterfinal match against Birmingham-Southern, 3-1, on the campus of Hendrix College.
Despite an outstanding effort, Sewanee lost to the third-seeded Panthers 25-27, 25-20, 25-15, 25-22. The Tigers finished their season with an overall record of 8-19.
Sewanee opened the contest by hitting only .071 in the first set. However, a strong defensive effort and some key kills helped the Tigers take an early 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, BSC roared back with strong offensive performances the next three sets.
Individually, All-SAA performer Diamond Stewart finished with a match-high 15 kills and 22 digs. Fellow all-conference selection senior Jamie Sue Wilson added 15 digs and seven kills while SAA Defensive Player of the Year Sara Jayne Sutton finished with a match-high 38 digs.
Additionally, senior Rachel Schuman closed out her career with a 17-assist, 13-dig double-double. Fellow setter Walker Buxton also pitched in a team-high 18 assists.
With the win, BSC advances to Saturday's semifinal round.
Friday also marked the final match for Schuman and Wilson. Both students-athletes helped Sewanee achieve numerous wins and awards over the past four seasons. After the Tigers struggled as a team early in their both players careers, Schuman and Wilson helped turn the program around. In 2013, Sewanee finished with its most wins in a single-season since 1999. Additionally, both captains led Sewanee to its first conference tournament win since 1997 one year ago.
