Sewell's double-double leads Sewanee to an impressive win over Covenant

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 18, 2014) – Led by a double-double from senior forward Kayla Sewell, the Sewanee women's basketball team rolled past regional-rival Covenant 72-58, Tuesday, in the Tigers' home opener inside Juhan Gymnasium.

Under first-year head coach Tom Campbell, Sewanee is 2-0 early this season.

Sewell finished with a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds. Additionally, she finished 8-for-10 from the field, including 3-for-3 from outside the three-point line. Sewell also pitched in two blocks, three assists, and one steal.

Both teams got off to a slow start with neither team hitting double digits until the 9:01 mark in the first half. With the score in favor of the Tigers at 9-8, Sewanee's offense came alive.

A three by Sewell and a jumper by Haley Lyerly quickly made the score 14-8. After a 5-0 run by the Scots, the Tigers responded with 19-3 run to close the half.

During that stretch Jamie Chauvin, Sewell, and Savannah Rose all made shots. With that, Sewanee took a 33-16 lead into halftime.

Out of the locker room Sewanee would stretch its lead to 21,37-16, when Hannah McCormack hit a layup off a Covenant turnover.

Just when it looked like the Tigers would ease to victory, Covenant fought back. The Scots would go on a 15-5 run to cut their deficit to 13, 44-31.

Sewanee and Covenant would continue to battle back and forth over the next 11 minutes. With 3:47 to play, Haley Soles hit a layup to pull the Covenant deficit to within 11, 64-53.

However, back-to-back layups by Sewell and McCormack grew the Sewanee lead back to 15.

As a team, Sewanee shot 45.9 percent from the floor. On defense, the Tigers limited Covenant to a 32.7 shooting percentage and forced 22 turnovers.

Another big key for Sewanee was the Tigers ability to score inside. Sewanee outscore Covenant 32-12 in the paint and also had 17 points off of turnovers.

Along with Sewell, Chauvin scored 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. McCormack also finished in double figures with 12 points.

Additionally, Casey Hassett finished with two points, eight rebounds, and five blocks.

Guard Liz Dougherty led Covenant with a team-high 14 points.

Sewanee continues its four-game homestand with a 6:00 p.m. contest against Welch, Friday.
