Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Jan. 4, 2013) – In its first Southern Athletic Association (SAA) contest of 2013, the Sewanee women's basketball team looked strong at times but unfortunately faded late in a tough 61-58 loss at Birmingham-Southern, Friday, inside Bill Battle Coliseum.
The game was close throughout. Sewanee (5-5, 0-2 SAA) led by eight points midway through the first half, before BSC (5-7, 1-1 SAA) found itself down six at halftime.
Out of the break, things stayed tight. Sewanee kept its lead until the 17:54 mark, when Melanie Short tied the game, 29-29, with 17:29 to play.
Over the next five minutes BSC pushed its lead to five points twice, before the Tigers stormed back. A pair of threes by Jamie Chauvin and McKenzie Jones put Sewanee back in front with 10:31 left.
Neither team would lead by more than three points over the next six minutes, until Kayla Sewell gave the Tigers a four-point advantage, 53-49, with 4:24 to play.
Unfortunately, BSC scored the next six points behind three free throws and a three-pointer by Elizabeth Bromirski.
Sewanee responded with a with a 5-0 run after Paige Lowe made a three and a pair of free throws on back-to-back possessions.
With the Tigers up two, 58-56, with 2:24 left, Sewanee's offense went cold. BSC took advantage of its opportunity with scores by Bromirski and Short.
Down by three, 61-58, with 17 seconds left, Sewanee set up an offensive set after BSC called timeout.
Unfortunately, a last-second three-point attempt by Lowe missed as time expired.
Lowe and Chauvin led the way for the Tigers with 13 points each. Additionally, Sewell and Jones each pitched in nine points.
Bromirski paced the Panthers with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-19 shooting.
The Tigers will continue their two-game conference road trip with a 1:00 p.m., contest Sunday at Millsaps.
