Strong second half lifts Centre over Sewanee

Box Score

DANVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 12, 2013) – A strong second half helped Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre defeat the Sewanee women's basketball team, 56-37, Saturday inside Alumni Gymnasium.

Early in the first half Sewanee played well. The Tigers jumped out to a 7-6 lead after Jamie Chauvin knocked down a three with just over five minutes off the clock.

After a 9-0 run by Centre, Sewanee kept the score close with a mini spurt of its own. A pair of free throws by McKenzie Jones and a three by Paige Lowe pulled the Tigers to within seven, 19-12, midway through the first half.

Sewanee and Centre continued to trade baskets before the Colonels ended the half on a 7-3 run.

Down 31-18 at halftime, the Tigers' deficit grew after Centre scored eight of the first 11 points out of the break.

With 7:34 left to play, Sewanee pulled to within 11 points, 43-32, after Lowe and Jones made back-to-back threes.

Unfortunately, any attempt of a comeback was short lived, after Centre scored the next nine points.

Individually, Lowe led Sewanee with a team-high 15 points. Additionally, sophomore Kayla Sewell pitched in six points and a team-high nine rebounds while Chauvin finished with nine points.

Forwards Chelsea Benham and Paige Baechle led Centre with a pair of double-doubles. Benham finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Baechle added a game-high 21 points and 11 boards.

After eight straight road games, Sewanee finally returns to Juhan Gymnasium for a 6:00 p.m., contest against Berry College, Friday. This season the Tigers are currently 2-1 at home.
