WINTER HAVEN, Fla. 3/24/12 –
Wilson Nealy drove in
Alan Komorowski with a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Sewanee Tigers a dramatic 9-8 come-from-behind victory over the Worcester State Lancers in Sewanee's final game of the 2012 Russ-Matt Invitational.
The win was the fourth consecutive for the Tigers and raises their season record to 9-11.
After a scoreless first inning the Lancers scored three runs in the top of the second inning and four more in the third to take a 7-0 lead. Sewanee got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning with two runs to cut Worcester State's lead to 7-2.
In the top of the sixth inning the Lancers plated a single run to increase their lead to 8-2. Sewanee responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit to five runs again at 8-3.
A five-run seventh inning by the Tigers knotted the score at 8-8 and set the stage for Nealy's eighth inning heroics.
In the bottom of the eighth Komorowski walked and stole second base. With two outs Nealy lined a double to right field chasing Komorowski home with Sewanee's ninth run of the game.
Freshman
Adam Schmidt retired the Lancers in the ninth inning to preserve the win for the Tigers.
Nealy led the Tigers at the plate with a 3-for-5 effort and three RBI.
James Snover had three hits, including a double, and an RBI.
Schmidt allowed only one hit over the final two innings to pick up the win on the mound for Sewanee.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday when they host Piedmont College at Montgomery Field. Game time is 2:00 pm.
