AUBURNDALE, Fla. 3/21/12 – The Sewanee Tigers jumped out to an early 10-2 lead over UMASS-Dartmouth today in Russ-Matt Invitational baseball action, but had to hold off a late charge from the Corsairs to come away with a hard-fought 11-10 victory.
The Tigers built an eight-run lead after the top of the fourth inning on four runs in the third and six runs in the fourth. The Corsairs clawed back to within one run with a five-run sixth inning making the score 10-9. Sewanee added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to take a two-run lead. UMASS-Dartmouth pushed one more run across the plate in the home half of the eighth, but the Tigers were able to hold on for the 11-10 final score.
Freshman
Charles Warren was credited with the win on the mound for Sewanee.
Alan Komorowski pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his second save of the season.
The Corsairs outhit the Tigers 17-9 in the game.
Blake Williams led Sewanee with three singles in four trips to the plate.
Jack Rogers picked up two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs, while
James Snover chipped in a four-RBI effort with a two-run double, a walk, and a sacrifice fly.
With the win, the Tigers up their record to 6-11 on the season.
Sewanee will continue Russ-Matt spring break action tomorrow when it faces Hamilton College at Chain O' Lakes Complex in Winter Haven, Fla. at 4:00 pm.
