DANVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 4, 2012) – The Centre women's basketball team showed why it is nationally ranked, as the No. 23/19 Colonels downed Sewanee, 81-49, Saturday inside Alumni Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Tigers are now 9-11 overall and 3-9 in SCAC play. Centre earned its 16th straight victory to improve to 19-1 overall with a perfect 12-0 mark in league action.
Centre led from start to finish after Alyson Burke hit a three-pointer to start the game. From there, the Colonels built their lead throughout the contest. Sewanee made a late run right before the half, when the Tigers cut the deficit to 11.
However, the Sewanee momentum slowly faded as Centre used a strong second half to pull away.
Sewanee finished 28-of-53 (33.3 percentage) from the floor. Outside the three-point line, the Tigers, who lead the SCAC in threes made per contest, hit only four out of their 25 attempts.
Individually, junior guard
Dana Middleton led the Tigers with 16 points and five steals. Freshman forward
Kayla Sewell added nine points, six rebounds, and two blocks.
Chelsea Benham and Maggie Prewitt led 12 Colonels, with 13 points each. As a team, Centre hit 52.8 percent of its attempts while going a perfect 14-for-14 at the free throw line.
The Tigers return to action with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Oglethorpe February 10.
