BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 12, 2012) – After taking a four-point lead early on, the Sewanee women's basketball team struggled offensively in a 62-45 loss at Birmingham-Southern, Sunday, inside Bill Battle Coliseum.
The Tigers jumped out quickly after a layup by freshman
Kayla Sewell and a jumper by
Logan Miller. Up four, 4-0, with 15:32 left in the first half, Birmingham-Southern came back with an 18-4 run. From there, Sewanee would get as close as 10 only once, when Sewell hit a late first half jumper.
Up, 32-17, at the intermission, Birmingham-Southern stayed ahead by at least 13 points the final 20 minutes.
As a team, Sewanee was hampered by a lack of offense. The Tigers shot only 17-of-61, which included a dismal 4-for-24 effort from behind the arc. By comparison, the Panthers hit 40 percent of their attempts and outrebounded Sewanee by 15.
Individually, junior guard
Dana Middleton led the Tigers with 18 points.
Guard Caroline King led Birmingham-Southern with 10 points. Overall, only four out 14 Panther players failed to score.
Sewanee will look to turn things around when the Tigers take on long-time rival Rhodes, Friday. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
