Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 15, 2012) – The Sewanee women's basketball team opened the season with an impressive 59-31 win over visiting Welch College Thursday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
From the start, the Tigers were in control. After taking an early 7-0 lead, Sewanee used its tough defense and strong outside shooting to push the lead to 25 points, 35-10, by halftime.
Out of the locker room the Tigers kept rolling. Sewanee opened on a 4-0 run after a free throw by Jamie Chauvin and three-pointer by Clarissa Medley.
Later in the half Sewanee pushed its advantage to 46-23, when Paige Lowe connected on her third three. From there, the Tigers finished the game on a 13-8 run.
Overall, Sewanee shot 40 percent from the field, including an 11-for-28 total from behind the arc. Defensively, the Tigers forced a game-high 18 turnovers while Kayla Sewell, Haley McDonough, and Chauvin combined for seven blocks.
Individually, Lowe along with Dee Bradford, led nine Tiger scorers with 12 points. Along with her blocks, Sewell finished with four points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Forward Taylor Ford led Welch with 10 points.
Sewanee returns to action next Tuesday, November 20th against Agnes Scott. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., inside Juhan Gymnasium.
