Dana Middleton, the Sewanee women's basketball team used a strong second half to defeat regional-rival Covenant, 69-44, Monday inside the Barnes Physical Education Center.
With the victory, the Tigers (8-5) have now won five our of their last six games.
Unlike their game last week, Sewanee allowed Covenant to stay close in the first half. After five lead changes the first 15 minutes of action, the Tigers used a 10-4 run late in the half to lead the Scots 32-25 at the intermission.
As both teams returned from the locker room, Sewanee finally took command early in the second half. After a quick jumper by freshman
Kayla Sewell, the Tigers pushed their advantage to 10, 36-26, when Middleton hit a shot after a Covenant turnover.
Sewanee would use a 13-1 run, over the next six minutes, to slowly pull away from the Scots.
A big key for Sewanee was its defense. The Tigers forced 29 Covenant turnovers which led to 29 points. Additionally, another key for the Tigers, were their ability to get offensive rebounds. Sewanee was able to convert 17 offensive rebounds into 23 second chance points.
Individually, Middleton and Miller each had 15 points while Sewell added a career-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
Covenant was led by Margaret Cross who had a game-high 21 points.
Sewanee returns to action with a 6:00 p.m. contest Friday against Hendrix in Conway, Arkansas.
