SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 21, 2012) – After committing 16 first half turnovers, the Sewanee women's basketball could not dig themselves out of an early deficit, falling to Southwestern, 78-50, Saturday night inside Juhan Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Tigers are now 8-9 overall and 2-7 in SCAC play.
Early on, Sewanee found themselves down after Southwestern built a 12 point lead midway through the first half. As the half progressed, things did not change for Sewanee. The Pirates used a 12-4 run to lead at the intermission, 40-20.
In the second half, Southwestern wasted little time extending its advantage. The Pirates led by 23, 50-27, when Chelsea Leeder connected on a three with 17:10 to play. From there, Sewanee would eventually cut the lead to 19, 67-48, when
Logan Miller hit a jumper around the five minute mark. Unfortunately, the Tigers' basket did little to stop any momentum built by Southwestern. The Pirates closed the game on a 8-2 run for the final margin.
Behind intense defensive pressure, Southwestern forced 23 turnovers. Additionally, Sewanee struggled from the floor after making only 17-of-50 attempts.
Individually,
Kayla Sewell led Sewanee with her second career double-double. The freshman forward finished with 11 rebounds and 10 points. The only other Tiger in double figures was
Alex Ginsburg who also added 10 points.
The Pirates were led by Leeder who finished with a game-high 19 points. In the contest, every Southwestern player finished with at least two points.
Sewanee returns to action with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Dallas in Irving, Texas.
