SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 20, 2012) – Led by Murphy Burns and Hannah Coley, Trinity used a strong second half surge to down Sewanee 87-74 Friday evening inside Juhan Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Tigers are now 8-8 overall and 2-5 in SCAC play.
Early on, Sewanee used an 11-2 run to take its first lead with 12:31 left in the first half. The Tigers continued their offensive output when senior
Virginia Zakas capped off an 18-6 run with a jumper at the 6:24 mark.
After three straight Trinity baskets cut the lead to seven, 31-24, Sewanee pushed its advantage back to 11, when senior
Dani Kabbes connected on back-to-back jumpers. The remainder of the half stayed in favor of Sewanee after
Alex Friedl, and
Paige Lowe converted key shots in the final minutes.
In the second half, Trinity wasted little time coming back. The Tigers took their first lead, since early in the first half, when Coley connected on a three with 16:32 remaining. From there, Trinity started to build momentum. Sewanee briefly regained the lead when Zakas's jumper put the Tigers up one, 54-53. However, over the final 12 minutes, Trinity shot 52 percent from the floor which led to their largest advantage of the game.
Sewanee was led by Kabbes who netted a season-high 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Junior
Heather Baier pitched in 11 points while senior
Claire Elliott and Friedl each added 10.
Trinity was paced by Burns who scored a game-high 32 points. Not to be outdone, Coley filled up the stat sheet with 24 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and four steals.
Sewanee quickly returns to action with an 6:00 p.m. contest Saturday against Southwestern inside Juhan Gymnasium.
