CONWAY, Ark. (Jan. 13, 2012) – Aided by a number of key free throws down the stretch, Hendrix College squeaked by the Sewanee women's basketball team, 59-56, Friday night inside Grove Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Tigers are now 8-6 overall and 2-4 in SCAC play.
Throughout the game, the Tigers and Warriors battled evenly. Neither team led by more than eight points the entire contest. Additionally, Sewanee and Hendrix combined for eight lead changes while being tied at the half.
With the score tied for the eight time, 50-50, with 2:00 remaining, freshman forward
Kayla Sewell pushed the Tigers in front with a made free throw.
Unfortunately, from there, Sewanee would not retake the lead. With Hendrix up two, 53-51, junior guard
Dana Middleton missed Sewanee's first chance when her jumper went off the back rim. After three Samantha Devlin free throws, Middleton did pull the Tigers to within two, 56-54, with 16 seconds to play.
After another Hendrix free throw, this time by Anna Roane, Middleton converted a layup to make the score 57-56 with seven seconds remaining.
After two more free throws by Roane, the Tigers would have one more chance to extend the game. Unfortunately, after timeouts by both teams, Middleton's game-tying three fell just short at the buzzer.
Middleton led the Tigers with 19 points and five assists. Senior
Logan Miller added 15 points, on 5-of-9 shooting, while Sewell pitched in nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
For the Warriors, Roane had a game-high 21 points while teammate Katy Ashley-Pauley added 10. Additionally, forward Jamie Tate helped Hendrix outrebound Sewanee, 54-30, with a game-high 16 boards.
The Tigers continue their two-game road trip with a noon contest Sunday at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
