NEW ALBANY, Miss. 3/10/11 – Highlighted by a no-hit performance on the mound by freshman southpaw Lee Schurlknight (Darlington, S.C., Byrnes Academy) in Game 1 and an offense that pounded out a combined 37 hits in two games, the Sewanee Tigers swept past Rust College today in an afternoon doubleheader played in New Albany, Mississippi.
Sewanee rolled by the Bearcats 19-0 in the first game and 17-3 in the nightcap.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Schurlknight worked the complete seven-inning game, striking out 12 and allowing only two walks to pick up his first win in a Sewanee uniform.
The Tigers jumped out to a quick lead by posting six runs in the top of the first inning and added eight more runs in the third en route to the 19-0 win.
The 17-hit attack was led by Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's), Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) and Colin Barrera (Ponte Vedra, Fla., Providence), who each had three hits in five trips to the plate. Mauro's effort included a homerun, a double and six RBI. Pogue drove in four runs while Scott Ward (Murfreesboro, Tenn., Oakland) belted his first homerun of the season.
In Game 2, the Tigers continued their torrid hitting pounding out 20 hits and scoring a run in every inning as they coasted to a 17-3 victory.
Connor Liston (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Episcopal) was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with three doubles and two RBI. Ward knocked in three runs with four hits, including his second homerun of the twinbill and a double. Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) and Pogue contributed three hits each. Reilly and Wilson Nealy (Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery Bell Academy) also blasted homeruns.
Barerra picked up the win for the Tigers pitching a complete seven-inning game. He gave up two earned runs on only three hits while striking out four and walking one.
The Tigers up their record to 3-5 on the season.
Sewanee will be back in action on Saturday when they begin play at the Russ-Matt Invitational squaring off with Drew University at 2:30 pm EST in Lakeland, Florida.
