SEWANEE, Tenn. 2/26/11 – The Sewanee Tigers and the Spalding University Golden Eagles split a doubleheader in baseball action played today at Montgomery Field in Sewanee.  The Tigers took the opener 11-10 and Spalding won the nightcap 9-5.

Connor Liston's (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Episcopal) sacrifice fly chased home Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) from third in the bottom of the sixth inning for the deciding run in the first game of the afternoon doubleheader as the Tigers rallied for the 11-10 win.  Trailing 10-3 after four innings, Sewanee stormed back scoring five runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to capture their first win of the season in the scheduled seven-inning game.

After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Eagles struck for two runs in the top of the second inning.  Sewanee responded by tying the score in the bottom of the frame when Scott Ward (Murfreesboro, Tenn., Oakland) singled home Liston and Mauro scored on a double to right center by Ryne Sullivan (Metarie, La., Isidore Newman).

Spalding erupted for seven runs in the top of the third inning to take a 9-2 lead.

The Tigers picked up a single run in the bottom of the third on a one-out single by Liston.  Colin Barrera (Ponte Vedra, Fla., Providence), pinch-running for the injured Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy), who had led off the inning with a double, scored to cut into the Golden Eagle's lead.

Spalding extended their lead in the top of the fourth to 10-3 setting the stage for the Tiger comeback.

A pair of two-run doubles off the bats of Liston and Blake Williams (Metter, Ga., Metter) and a run-scoring single by Sullivan highlighted a five-run fifth inning pulling the Tigers within two runs of the Golden Eagles.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) led off with a single.  Barrera followed with an RBI-double to the gap in left center.  Mauro reached first base on a single.  Barrera scored Sewanee's tenth run on a throwing error by the Spalding catcher.  Liston then drove a fly ball to deep left field sending Mauro home from third with the go-ahead run.

Winning pitcher Wilson Nealy (Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery Bell Academy) retired the Golden Eagles in the top of the seventh to nail down the Sewanee victory.  Nealy was on in relief of starting pitcher Mauro.

Mauro turned in a 3-for-4 effort at the plate and Liston, Williams and Sullivan chipped in two hits each.  Liston led the way with four RBI.

In the second game of the twinbill, Spalding jumped out quickly to a 3-0 lead after a half inning of play.

Sewanee countered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute) led off with a single.  Reilly doubled Komorowski home and later scored when Mauro grounded out to the shortstop.

The Tigers tied the game at three apiece in the bottom the third when Reilly singled home Komorowski from second base.  Komorowski had stolen second base after being hit by a pitch.

The Golden Eagles were able to put up a three-spot in both the fourth and fifth innings while Sewanee could only manage one run in the fourth and a single run in the fifth making the final score 9-5.

Starting pitcher Jacob Simpson (Franklin, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) was charged with the loss on the mound for the Tigers in the second game.

Reilly led Sewanee with three hits in four at bats and drove in two runs.  Komorowski, Liston and Ward each had two hits.

Sewanee is now 1-3 on the season and will return to action at 6 pm on Tuesday when they square off with the Maryville Scots in a game to be played at Gamble Sports Complex in Winchester, Tennessee.
