The Sewanee women's basketball team closed out the 2010-2011 season with a 74-49 SCAC loss to visiting Oglethorpe University. The Tigers managed to stay close with the Stormy Petrels for much of the first half, but Oglethorpe used a 21-5 run spanning five minutes to close out the first frame. The Petrels never looked back on their way to improving to 6-18 on the season and 5-11 in the SCAC. Sewanee finishes the year with a 2-23 overall record and an 0-16 conference record.

The Tigers struggled with shooting woes all evening and quickly found themselves down 8-1 early on. Dana Middleton (Norcross, Ga., Marist), who had scored the Tigers' first point on a free throw, nailed a 3-pointer at the 17:16 mark to make it 8-4 Oglethorpe. The Petrels answered with a lay up by Sarah Giles before Middleton hit another freebie and Alex Ginsburg (Hollywood, S.C., Pinewood Prep) knocked down a jumper to make it a 10-7 ballgame.

Middleton hit a 3-pointer of her own for Sewanee to tie the game at 10-10 but Oglethorpe's Riley Cerone hit a trey to answer and put the Petrels up three. The visitors got a pair of baskets to push their lead to 18-10 before Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption) hit a lay up for the hosts. An Oglethorpe jumper made it 20-12, but Sewanee got back-to-back baskets to cut the Petrel lead to just three, 20-17.

After Sewanee closed the gap to three, Oglethorpe hit the gas and never looked back. The Stormy Petrels outscored the Tigers 21-5 over the remainder of the first half and headed into the intermission holding a 41-22 lead.

Things didn't look much different for the Tigers as the second half opened up. Oglethorpe scored four straight to open the frame and take a 24-point lead, 46-22. The Tigers then got seven straight points, a jumper from Ginsburg and a 3-pointer and two free throws Middleton to cut the difference to 17, 46-29. But unfortunately for Sewanee, 18 points was as small as the gap would get for the rest of the game.

The Stormy Petrels used a 14-2 run to push their lead to as many as 31, 68-37, during the final minutes of the game. Sewanee got a pair of free throws each from Logan Miller (Franklin, Tenn., Christ Presbyterian) and Ginsburg, as well as a jumper from Elliott to close out their attack on the day. Ky'Laine Rogers hit a lay up in the paint for Oglethorpe with just 18 seconds left to finish the scoring and give the Stormy Petrels a 74-49 victory.

Elliott led Sewanee with 15 points and three assists, while Middleton chipped in 14 points and Ginsburg added 10. Ginsburg led the Tigers with eight rebounds and three steals.

Oglethorpe's Sarah Giles led all scorers with 17 points and eight rebounds. The Petrels finished with five players in double-figures, including Riley Cerone, who had 14 and Sarah Jones, who had 13.

As a team, Sewanee went 14 of 53 from the field (26.4%) and just 6 of 27 from the 3-point line (22.2%). The Tigers hit 15 of 20 free throws. Oglethorpe ended the game 28 of 60 from the field (46.7%), 12 of 19 from the 3-point line (63.2%), and a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line. The Petrels held a 42-30 edge in rebounding. Sewanee turned the ball over 17 times to the Petrels 20.

Sewanee wraps up the regular season with the loss. The Tigers lose no seniors.
