Women's basketball team drops 87-41 decision to DePauw

Box Score  Turnovers proved costly for the Sewanee women's basketball team Sunday afternoon as the DePauw Tigers turned 12 Sewanee turnovers into 18 points in the first half, building a double-digit halftime lead before cruising to an 87-41 win. Sewanee was never able to overcome the difference, as they dropped to 2-22 overall and 0-15 in the SCAC. DePauw moves to 20-3 on the year and 13-1 in the conference. Dana Middleton led the Tigers with 13 points.

Sewanee struggled in the first half, failing to find the basket for over three minutes. After falling behind 8-0, Logan Miller nailed a 3-pointer for the Tigers to cut the DePauw lead to 8-3. The Indiana Tigers responded with another 8-0 run on their way to a 16-3 lead before Claire Elliott hit a pair of free throws for the visiting Tigers to stop the DePauw attack and make it 16-5.

The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes but DePauw managed to keep their lead between 11 and 13 points. The host Tigers were able to stretch the lead to 16 when Ellie Pearson was fouled and converted an old-fashioned three-point play into a 30-14 DePauw play. Middleton hit a pair of free throws for Sewanee to make it 33-16, but DePauw hit a pair of free throws of their own and got a basket from Alex Gasaway to go ahead 17, 33-16.

The two Tiger teams matched each other score for score over the next two minutes, but DePauw got back-to-back baskets as the half ended to take a 42-23 lead into the break.

The second half turned into more of a challenge for Sewanee as DePauw opened up the frame with an 18-4 run to take a 60-27 edge. Gasaway made it 63-27 with an old-fashioned three-point play before Sewanee was able to stop the attack when Middleton hit one of two free throws, making it 63-28, DePauw.

Both teams got baskets before DePauw pushed their lead to 40, 73-33, at the 8:17 mark. DePauw closed out the game with a 14-8 run over the final eight minutes to take home an 87-41 win.

Middleton led the Tigers with 13 points on 9 of 12 shooting from the free throw line. Dee Bradford, Claire Elliott, and Logan Miller all finished with seven points.

DePauw's Katie Mathews led all scorers with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Gasaway chipped in 15.

As a team, Sewanee finished the day 11 of 41 from the field (26.8%), 4 of 23 from the 3-point line, and 15 of 18 from the free throw line. DePauw finished 36 of 74 from the field (48.6%), 7 of 29 from the 3-point line (24.1%), and 8 of 16 from the charity stripe. The Indiana Tigers held a 52-23 edge in rebounding. Sewanee turned the ball over 20 times in the contest, while DePauw gave it up 12 times.

Sewanee will be back in action on Saturday when they play host to Oglethorpe University in their final regular season contest of the year.
