Sewanee drops SCAC battle with Centre, 78-63

Sewanee took a 2-0 lead in the first minute against Centre College Friday night, but the Colonels responded to make it 3-2 and never looked back on their way to a 78-63 SCAC victory over the Tigers. Four scorers finished in double-digits for the Tigers, with Dana Middleton's 18 points leading the way as Sewanee slipped to 2-21 overall and 0-14 in the SCAC. Centre moves to 15-7 on the year and 9-4 in the conference.

Middleton put the Tigers on the board 54 seconds in when her jumper found the net, making it 2-0 Sewanee. Centre's Alyson Burke responded with a 3-pointer for the hosts as the Colonels took their first lead of the game, 3-2, just over a minute in. Centre never looked back, as they followed Burkes' trey with an 11-0 run to jump out to a 14-2 lead.

Sewanee managed to stem the Colonel attack as Middleton added eight straight points for the Tigers. Middleton, who scored the Tigers' first 10 points, single-handedly cut the Centre lead to just four, 14-10 at the 13:50 mark. Burke hit another three for Centre to push the lead back to seven, but Sewanee responded with a 3-pointer from Claire Elliott and a short jumper from Alex Ginsburg to make the difference just two, 17-15.

The two squads traded baskets over the next several minutes as the Colonel lead swung between three and six points before the Tigers scored five straight to cut the gap to just one, 23-22, Centre. A trey by Paige Lowe and a lay up in the paint by Ginsburg helped the Tigers get within one but it was as close as Sewanee would get for the rest of the night.

Three minutes later Sewanee found themselves down just two points, 27-25, but Centre used a 19-7 run over four minutes to extend their lead to 14, 46-32. With 28 seconds left in the first frame, Middleton knocked down a three fro the Tigers to make it 46-35, but Centre's Chelsea Benham hit a pair of free throws as time wound down to give the Colonels a 48-35 halftime lead.

Claire Elliott nailed a three for Sewanee to open up the second half, but Centre used a 15-2 run spanning nearly ten minutes to push their lead to 23, 63-40. The Tigers got just their second field goal of the half at the 9:32 mark when Logan Miller connected on a 3-pointer to make the difference 20, 63-43. The two teams traded baskets for several minutes before the Colonels again made their lead 23, 74-51, with 4:06 remaining in the game.

The Tigers kick-started a comeback in the final minutes, but it was too late. Paige Lowe nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Centre lead to 17. Logan Miller followed that up with a three of her own, chopping the difference to 14, 74-60. Maggie Prewitt grabbed a basket for the Colonels to push the lead back to 16, followed by a lay up by Elizabeth Bressler to push it to 18. Sewanee got another three, this one from Claire Elliott, with just two seconds left on the clock to make the final score 78-63 in favor of the Colonels.

Four Tigers finished in double-digits. Middleton led the way with 18 points, five assists and four steals. Elliott added 14 points and three assists. Miller added 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting from the 3-point line, while Lowe chipped in 11 after going 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. Ginsburg finished the night with nine rebounds and eight points.

Centre's Prewitt led all scorers with 20 points, while Chelsea Benham added 19. Lauren Huter grabbed a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

As a team, Sewanee went 21 of 52 from the field (40.4%), 13 of 38 from the 3-point line (34.2%), and 8 of 9 from the free throw line. Centre ended the night 30 of 69 from the floor (43.5%), 9 of 26 from beyond the arc (34.6%), 9 of 12 from the charity stripe. The Colonels held a 49-24 edge in rebounding.

Sewanee will be back in action on Sunday when they head to DePauw University for the tail-end of an SCAC road trip weekend. The two Tiger squads are set to tip off at 12 p.m. (EST) in Greencastle.
