The Sewanee women's basketball team squared off with the Covenant College Scots for the second time this season Tuesday night and unfortunately for the Tigers, the outcome wasn't the same the second time around. Sewanee, who topped the Scots 100-94 in their season-opener in November, fell to Covenant 52-46 in Tuesday's rematch. Dana Middleton and Logan Miller led all scorers with 13 points in the effort, as the Tigers dropped to 2-17 on the season.
Middleton and Claire Elliott both hit 3-pointers for the Tigers to open up the contest, as Sewanee jumped out to a 6-0 lead early on. It took nearly three and a half minutes for the Scots to get on the board before Kiaira Cooper knocked down a lay up in the paint to make it 6-2. Starting with Cooper's basket, Covenant scored five straight to pull within one, 6-5, before Elliott knocked down another trey for the Tigers. Elliott added a pair of free throws a minute later to put Sewanee ahead 11-5, but Covenant responded with a 3-pointer of their own to difference three.
Two minutes and twenty seconds passed before anyone found the basket again, but at the midway point of the first half, Covenant's Christine Core nailed another three to help the Scots pull even for the first time at 11-11. The tie didn't last for long before Sewanee's Alex Ginsburg connected on another 3-pointer to give the Tigers a 14-11 lead. The two squads traded scores for the next several minutes before Sewanee went ahead by four, 19-15, in the final minutes of the frame.
After Sewanee went ahead by four, Covenant's Taylor Cameron hit a 3-pointer for the hosts to cut the difference to one and Emily Dupree followed that up with a Scot lay up to give Covenant their first lead of the ballgame, 20-19. Elliott fouled Dupree on the shot and Dupree connected on the free throw to put the Scots ahead by two. Sewanee's Clarissa Medley quickly tied the game at 21-all when she knocked down a short jumper with 58 seconds left in the half. 19 seconds later, Covenant got a lay up from Jessie Blankenship, followed by a 3-pointer from Margaret Cross and the Scots headed into the locker room holding a 26-21 lead.
Covenant scored again to open up the second-half, taking a seven-point lead. The two teams traded baskets and pairs of free throws over the next several minutes before the Scots went ahead by as many as nine, 35-26. After the Scots extended their lead to nine, the Tigers went on a 12-3 run spanning six minutes to tie the game at 35-35. Covenant answered with back-to-back baskets to go ahead 39-35. Middleton converted a fast break for the Tigers to cut the Covenant lead to two But Covenant used an 8-0 stretch to put the game away and take a 48-40 lead with just 42 seconds remaining.
Logan Miller connected on three straight free throws for the Tigers to cut the difference to as few as five with 25 seconds remaining. But the Scots, who shot 100% from the charity stripe, connected on four more free throws to close out their attack. Middleton nailed a 3-pointer for the Tigers with two seconds left on the clock to make the final score 52-46.
Middleton finished with 13 points and seven steals in 28 minutes of action. Miller added 13 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Claire Elliott chipped in 10 points.
Jessie Blankenship led Covenant with 10 points, while Hannah Craft finished with seven points and 10 rebounds. Kiaria Cooper and Christine Core each added eight points for the Scots.
As a team, Sewanee shot 25% from the field, going 14 of 56 in the contest. The Tigers finished the night 8 of 30 from the 3-point line and 10 of 19 from the free throw line. Covenant went 14 of 36 (38.9%) from the field, 6 of 17 (35.3%) from the 3-point line, and 18 of 21 (85.7%) from the charity stripe in the contest.
Sewanee forced the Scots into 27 turnovers, while turning the ball over just 11 times themselves. Covenant held a 38-30 edge in rebounding.
With the loss, the Tigers extend their skid to 11 and fall to 2-17 overall. They will be back in action on Friday when they host Birmingham-Southern College in an SCAC match up. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
