JACKSON, Miss. (Dec. 4, 2011) – For the second consecutive game, the Sewanee women's basketball team did not look like its high-powered self. After scoring their second lowest score of the season Friday, the usual explosive Tigers dropped a 64-50 decision at Millsaps Sunday afternoon inside the Hanger Dome.
With the loss, Sewanee is now 3-4 overall. The Tigers are also 0-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play.
Sewanee opened an eight point lead, 17-9, midway through the first half after junior guard
Dana Middleton hit her second three of the contest. However, over a span of five minutes, the Majors went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 19-19.
Sewanee briefly regained its advantage a possession later, when
Devon Gunn netted a three at the 6:33 mark. Unfortunately, Millsaps closed the half on a 9-2 run giving the Majors a four-point advantage at the intermission.
In the second half, the Majors built their lead to as high as 21 when Shatoya White hit a jumper with 7:12 to play. The Tigers finally broke through when Middleton's layup stopped the drought at 53-32. Sewanee continued to cut the deficit after junior guard
Heather Baier and senior guard
Alex Ginsburg connected on consecutive three-pointers with 5:01 remaining.
Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Tigers would get after Millsaps scored three more baskets along with all four of its final free throw attempts.
Middleton led all scorers with 19 points and five assists. Freshman forward
Kayla Sewell added nine points while grabbing a season-high 15 rebounds.
As a team, the Tigers shot 26 percent from the floor including a dismal 24 percent (7-of-29) from outside the arc.
Velvet Johnson led Millsaps with 18 points while Lovie Love added 17. Shante Morton finished with a double-double after 12 points and 16 rebounds.
Sewanee opens a five-game homestand against Hiwassee College Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
