MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Dec. 2, 2011) – Held to its lowest offensive output of the season, the Sewanee women's basketball team fell at Rhodes 65-61 Friday inside Mallory Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Tigers now sit with a 3-3 overall record. Additionally, Sewanee fell to 0-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) action.
Neither team opened the game strong after both squads failed to shoot over 40 percent in the first half.
After trailing 32-30 at the intermission, Sewanee and the Lynx continued its back-and-forth affair late into the contest.
Unfortunately, a late rally by the Tigers fell just short after Rhodes converted some key free throws down the stretch.
Overall, Sewanee, who averages 93 points per game, failed to score over 70 points for the first time all season. Playing against the league's top defense, the Tigers were limited to a season-low 21 three point attempts.
For the game, the Tigers shot 35 percent from the field which included a 6-for-21 effort from behind the arc. Another key in the loss was Sewanee's inability to convert free throws. The Tigers left 13 points at the charity stripe after a 23-for-36 (63.9 percent) performance.
Individually, junior guard
Dana Middleton led the Tigers in scoring with 14 points. Fellow guard
Heather Baier added 10 points while freshman forward
Kayla Sewell posted eight boards in 16 minutes of play.
Rhodes forward Sharwill Bell led all players with a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Tigers continue their opening conference weekend with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Millsaps Sunday.
