SEWANEE, Tenn. (Dec. 16, 2011) – Led by junior guard Dana Middleton's career-high 36 points, the Sewanee women's basketball team came from behind for a 66-63 win over SCAC rival Oglethorpe Friday night inside Juhan Gymnasium.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the SCAC.
Additionally, Middleton's 36 points were the second highest single game total in school history.
The all-time single game points record is held by Sophie Brawner who scored 37 points against Johnson University in 1981.
After being down 40-29 at the intermission, the Tigers began their comeback with a 11-0 run to start the second half.
After consecutive three point field goals by senior Alex Ginsburg, the Stormy Petrels regained their advantage, 43-40, when Riley Cerone hit a three-point basket with 13:01 remaining.
Over the next 12 minutes both teams exchanged the lead eight times.
Moments later, Middleton tied the game at 61-61, when she converted two critical free throws with 37 seconds to play.
With the ball back, Oglethorpe responded quickly when Mareva Bone hit a layup which gave the Stormy Petrels a 63-61 advantage 24 seconds later.
With their backs against the wall, the Tigers need a key basket on its next offensive possession. After Middleton drew two defenders at the top of the key, the Norcross, Georgia native found teammate Heather Baier open on the opposite wing. From there, Baier took the pass and nailed her only three of the night which gave the Tigers the lead with 12 seconds left.
Suddenly down one, Oglethorpe's Ky'Laine Rogers quickly drove hard to the basket looking for a easy layup. Just when it looked like Rogers would convert her shot, Sewanee freshman Kayla Sewell made a key block which gave the ball back to the Tigers.
The Stormy Petrels then fouled immediately, sending Middleton to the line with two seconds left. Like she did all night, Middleton came through again when she hit both free throws to seal the win.
For the game, Middleton finished 10-of-26 from the floor. Ginsburg added 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting while Sewell led Sewanee on the glass with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Five Oglethorpe players finished in double figures led by Cerone's 15 points.
Sewanee returns to action with a 1:00 p.m. contest Sunday against Birmingham-Southern inside Juhan Gymnasium.
