Box Score: Sewanee vs. Centre
SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 7, 2011) – Oh what a difference a month makes. After losing to SCAC rival Centre earlier in the season, the Sewanee field hockey team responded the second time around against the Colonels, as the Tigers outlasted Centre 2-1 Friday afternoon at Tiger Field.
With the win Sewanee improved to 3-5 overall and now sits with a1-3 mark in league action. Centre dropped to 7-4 overall with a 3-1 record in conference matches.
"This season has really been about trust and work," said head coach
Michele Dombrowski. "Today, that paid off with execution and attention in all aspects of our game plan. While their skill and hustle on the field were excellent, I am most proud of how we got that critical win."
As play opened Centre controlled must of the tempo early. Despite facing a number of offensive chances junior goalkeeper
Anna Morrow stayed strong, turning away every Colonel chance.
With a strong defense behind them the Sewanee offense then got in the action as
Mary Kate McAlister fired a shot just inside the circle in the 19
th minute. On the play McAlister's hard shot then got deflected right in front of the goal by senior forward
Elise Landau, who redirected the ball into the cage for the first goal of the match.
The score stayed at 1-0 until Sewanee added its second goal of the contest with 27:19 off the clock in the second half. On the play
Karen Dawson tapped home a pass from
Sydney Philpott off a Tiger penalty corner.
Just when it looked like Sewanee would cruise to the win Centre didn't go away quietly as Leah Oberst converted a pass from Jessica McLean off a well executed corner play for the Colonels.
Fortunately, for the Tigers, Sewanee kept playing hard, keeping possession and blocking a number of late Centre shots for its first conference victory.
"The next test is carring that momentum into future game and practices," said Dombrowski.
Overall, Centre won the shot battle 18-14, while also outcornering Sewanee 16-7. Individually, Morrow led the Tiger defense with eight saves, while Landau added a game-high five shots.
Sewanee will now look to keep its winning ways as with a noon contest against Roanoke on Sunday.
