Sewanee, Tenn.- In a clash of SCAC Tiger teams, DePauw University's men's and women's basketball teams will visit Juhan Gymnasium on Sunday for an afternoon doubleheader. The 12 p.m. contest features the 12th-ranked DePauw women's team taking on Dickie McCarthy's Tigers, who are still searching for conference win number one this season. The 2 p.m. contest showcases former Sewanee head coach Bill Fenlon's DePauw Tigers against Bubba Smith's team, a young group of Tigers looking to rebound from Friday's close loss to Centre College.
In the women's game, Sewanee enters the contest riding a three-game losing streak after a tough 82-45 loss to Centre on Friday. DePauw enters the game ranked 12th in the country and is coming off a 71-48 drubbing of Oglethorpe University on Saturday. The home-standing Tigers are 2-9 overall and 0-4 in SCAC play, while DePauw sits at 11-2 overall and 4-0 in conference action.
Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne) leads Sewanee in both scoring and rebounding this season, averaging 18.5 points per game and grabbing 10 rebounds a night. Logan Miller (Franklin, Tenn., Christ Presbyterian) is the second leading contributor for the Tigers, adding 11.9 points a night, while Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption) picks up 11.3 points per game. The Tigers, who are ranked first nationally in 3-pointers made per game, make 10.2 treys a game and are shooting 33% from the field on the year.
For DePauw, Katie Mathews paces the Tigers with 12.7 points per game. Ellie Pearson leads with 10.0 rebounds a night, while Katie Aldrich is second with 11.9 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per contest. The black and gold Tigers shoot over 43% from the field for Head Coach Kris Huffman, who is in her 17th year at the helm of the DePauw program.
On the men's side of things, Sewanee is coming off a tough home loss to the Colonels of Centre College on Friday night. Despite being down just four points at halftime, the Tigers fell to the Colonels 65-51 after the visitors managed to hit 7 of 9 free throws in the closing minutes to put the game out of reach. Sewanee is currently 5-6 on the year and 1-3 in SCAC play, while DePauw is 7-6 overall and 2-2 in conference action. DePauw topped Oglethorpe, 73-61, in Saturday's contest. The black and gold Tigers are traveling on a rearranged as schedule, as the DePauw-Oglethorpe games were originally scheduled for Friday evening. Due to the death of an Oglethorpe student body leader, the contests were rescheduled for Saturday afternoon, giving DePauw just 24 hours between games.
Freshman Valentino Bryant (Hendersonville, Tenn., Beech) leads Sewanee in scoring, averaging 11.4 points per contest, while fellow freshman Anvil Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn., Brentwood) paces the Tigers with 5.9 rebounds per game. Nelson is second in scoring, adding 10.2 points per game, while Lewis Affronti (Virginia Beach, Va., Norfolk Academy) chipsin 8.5 points per contest.
DePauw Head Coach Bill Fenlon, who was the head coach at Sewanee from 1985-1988, returns to the Mountain to take on his former team in Sunday's contest. His Tigers are led by Sean Haseley, who is averaging 14.5 points per contest. Joe Bergfield adds 12.5 points a night and leads the team in rebounding with 6.3 boards per game. Drew Wills chips in 8.2 points per contest while Tommy Weakley adds 7.5.
