The Sewanee men's and women's basketball teams will host the Colonels of Centre College tonight, as both teams play their first home SCAC match ups of the season. The women are searching for their first conference win of the year, while the men try to put back-to-back SCAC wins together for the first time since the 2008-2009 season.
Dickie McCarthy's lady Tigers are 2-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference after an 83-66 loss to Rhodes College last weekend. The Colonels come into the contest with a 7-5 overall record and a 1-2 record in SCAC play. Centre dropped their last contest to DePauw University, falling to the black and gold Tigers, 77-57, on Sunday.
Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne) leads the Tigers in scoring and rebounding this season. Averaging a double-double, Kabbes is currently scoring 18.5 points per contest while pulling down 10.7 boards per game.
Logan Miller (Franklin, Tenn., Christ Presbyterian) and
Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption) are the other two Tigers currently averaging double figures in the scoring column. Miller is dropping in 12.3 points per game while Elliott adds 11.3 per contest. Elliott is second on the team with 4.4 rebounds per contest. The Tigers, who are ranked 1st in Division III in 3-point field goals made per game, are averaging 10.5 treys per contest and nearly 72 points per game.
Maggie Prewitt leads the Colonels with with 17.0 points per game while Lauren Huter paces Centre with 6.6 rebounds a night. Huter is second in scoring with 9.5 points per contest. As a team, Centre leads Division III in a category of their own: free throw shooting percentage. The Colonels are shooting 80.5% from the charity stripe this season.
On the men's side, freshman
Valentino Bryant (Hendersonville, Tenn., Beech) paces the Tigers with 11.2 points per contest. Fellow freshman
Anvil Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn., Brentwood) chips in 9.9 points per game and sophomore
Lewis Affronti (Virginia Beach, Va., Norfolk Academy) adds 8.9 a night. Nelson leads the Tigers in rebounding, grabbing 6.0 rebounds a contest while Bryant follows with 3.3. The men's team also ranks in the top 30 nationally in 3-point shooting. The Tigers are ranked 24th in Division III in 3-pointers made per contest, knocking down 8.9 3-pointers per contest.
The Tigers are 5-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play after their thrilling last second victory over Rhodes last weekend. Bryant hit a half court shot at the buzzer to give Sewanee a 65-63 win over the Lynx in their first conference victory on the road since January 2009.
The Centre men come into the contest with an 8-2 overall record and a 3-0 record in SCAC play. The Colonels topped DePauw University last weekend, 62-54. Greg Ross leads the Colonels in scoring, averaging 13.0 points per game, while Alex Lloyd leads in rebounding, grabbing 9.3 boards per night.
