Tigers entertain Warriors in SCAC doubleheader Friday

Friday night brings an SCAC East-West clash to Juhan Gymnasium, as Sewanee hosts the Hendrix Warriors in a conference doubleheader. The women tip off at 6 p.m and the men will follow at 8 p.m. Both Tiger squads are coming off a tough western road trip last weekend that saw the two teams go a combined 0-4 during the swing.

 

The Sewanee women's basketball team will kick things off at 6 p.m. as the Tigers continue to look for their first conference win of the season. The team is 2-14 overall and 0-9 in the SCAC. The Tigers dropped both of their contests last weekend, falling to Austin College, 79-62, and to Colorado College, 73-55. Against Austin, Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne) led Sewanee with 20 points and Logan Miller (Franklin, Tenn., Christ Presbyterian) added 15 points and four assists in the effort. Against Colorado College, newcomer Dana Middleton (Norcross, Ga., Marist) led the Tigers with 17 points.

 

On the season, Kabbes leads the Tigers in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.3 points and 8.4 rebounds a contest. Kabbes currently ranks fifth in the SCAC in both categories. Kabbes also ranks third in the conference in blocks, having blocked 33 shots this season. Miller also averages in double-figures for the Tigers, contributing 11.6 points per contest. She also has connected on 45 3-pointers this season, third best in the conference.

 

Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption) adds 10.8 points per game and is second in the SCAC in 3-point percentage, hitting 43.6% of her attempts. Elliott also ranks in the top-ten in assists after dishing out 54 assists so far this season. Middleton, a transfer who joined the team for the second semester, is averaging 8.8 points per game in just four appearances for the Tigers. As a team, Sewanee leads the nation in 3-point shooting, averaging 9.9 treys per game.

 

Hendrix comes into the contest with an 8-9 overall record and a 5-4 record in conference play. The Warriors have won their last two contests, a 71-63 win over Rhodes and a 71-65 win over Birmingham-Southern last weekend. The team's three other conference wins have come over Southwestern, Millsaps, and Colorado College.

 

Christina Byler leads the Warriors in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game, while Jamie Tate leads with 7.8 rebounds a night. Byler also adds 6.3 rebounds per contest. Katy Ashley-Pauley is second on the team, averaging 9.3 points per game, while Anna Roane adds 8.5 points a night. Byler is fifth in the SCAC with 37 3-pointers made and is ranked third in 3-point percentage, hitting 43% of her shots. Ashley-Pauley ranks sixth in the conference with 61 assists.

 

The Sewanee men will tip off at 8 p.m. and are looking to rebound from a pair of tough losses last weekend. The Tigers dropped a 51-34 decision to Austin College on Friday before falling 86-62 to Colorado College on Sunday. With the two losses, Sewanee is now 6-10 overall and 2-7 in the SCAC.  Brett Bouldin (Crossville, Ala., Crossville) led the Tigers over the weekend, scoring 17 points in the loss to Colorado.

 

A pair of freshman led the Tigers in scoring this season. Anvil Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn., Brentwood) leads the way with 10.4 points per game, while Valentino Bryant (Hendersonville, Tenn., Beech) adds 10.3 a night. Nelson also leads the Tigers in rebounding with 6.3 per game. Sophomore Tyler Brown (Goodlettsville, Tenn., Beech) adds 4.3 boards per contest. Floor leader Tony Marelle (Atlanta, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) dishes out 2.9 assists per game for the Tigers,

 

The Warriors are 5-12 overall and 1-8 in the conference after splitting their two SCAC contests last weekend. The Warriors defeated Rhodes 72-55 on Friday evening before falling to Birmingham-Southern, 85-63, on Sunday. The win against Rhodes snapped the Warriors' five-game skid and gave them their first conference win of the season.

 

Nick Heathscott leads the Warriors, averaging 12.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest. Ammon Martin follows with 9.1 points and 5.0 boards a night. Jaren Riley adds 10.6 points per game for Hendrix, while Martin also dishes out 2.9 assists per contest.
