SEWANEE, Tenn. 4/20/10 – The Sewanee Tigers closed the 2010 baseball season by dropping both games of an afternoon doubleheader to Piedmont College today at Montgomery Field. The Lions came out on top in game one by the score of 10-2 and captured the nightcap 6-1.
In the first game the Lions got on the board in the top of the first inning when they scored two runs.
Sewanee fought back with a run in the bottom of the inning. Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute) walked, stole second and reached third on an error by the Lions' second baseman. Komorowski then scored on an error by the shortstop on a grounder off the bat of Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's).
After Piedmont put three more runs up in the top of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead, the Tigers responded with a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Blake Williams (Metter, Ga., Metter).
The game remained at 5-2 until the seventh inning when Piedmont broke the game open with a five-run inning to take a 10-2 victory.
Piedmont outhit the Tigers 11-6. Greg Bartleski (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant) led Sewanee at the plate with two hits in the game. Williams, Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah), Michael Joseph (Orlando, Fla., Dr. Phillips) and Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) had one hit each.
Jacob Simpson (Franklin, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) went the distance and took the loss on the mound working seven innings allowing ten runs on eleven hits.
In game two Piedmont jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Sewanee tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Joseph led off the inning with a line drive double down the left field line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Bartleski.
A two-run homerun by Piedmont's Scott Haddock in the fifth and three more runs in the top of the sixth gave the Lions a 6-1 lead that stood as the final score.
Irwin was the losing pitcher for Sewanee going six full innings and allowing six runs on nine hits.
Irwin went 2-for-3, including a double, at the plate to lead Sewanee. Mac McCallum (Rockville, Md., St. Andrew's), Rascoe Dean (Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery Bell Academy), Reilly and Joseph all chipped a hit apiece.
Sewanee completes the season with a 7-28 record.
