BOX SCORE

Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne) poured in 18 points for visiting Sewanee, but the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University were simply too much for the Tigers, as Sewanee dropped a 79-54 decision in Atlanta Saturday night. Shooting woes seemed to doom the Tigers for most of the night, as they managed to shoot just over 32% from the field and 22.9% from beyond the 3-point line. As a team, the Petrels shot 44% from the field and led virtually the entire contest as they handed Sewanee a loss in their first conference game of the season. Sewanee falls to 1-5 on the season and 0-1 in SCAC play. Oglethorpe is now 2-4 on the year and 1-0 in conference action.

Host Oglethorpe jumped out to a 4-0 lead early on before Sewanee's Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption) knocked down a 3-pointer to get the Tigers on the board and cut the Petrel lead to 4-3. The Petrels responded with a lay up by Chelsea MacDonald to make it 6-3 Oglethorpe, but Kabbes nailed a trey for Sewanee to tie things up at 6-6 just over three minutes into the contest.

Shortly after Kabbes tied it, the Petrels went on a 15-point run and jumped out to a 21-6 lead near the midway point of the first half. Emily Rhodes (Richmond, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) broke the Tiger silence at the 11:35 point when she knocked down a jumper to make it 21-8 Oglethorpe, but the Petrels responded just seconds later with a 3-pointer from Sarah Jones to push their lead to 16.

After the Petrels pushed it to 16, their largest lead of the first half, Sewanee turned in an 11-0 run to cut the Oglethorpe lead to just five. The Tigers started the run with a 3-pointer from Kali Hutson (Winchester, Tenn., Franklin County). Kabbes followed Hutson's three with a jumper of her own before Elliott knocked down a jumper in the paint to cut the lead to nine. Alex Ginsburg (Hollywood, S.C., Pinewood Prep) and Logan Miller (Franklin, Tenn., Christ Presbyterian) both added field goals as Sewanee moved to within five, 24-19, with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.

Katie Weeks put a stop to the Sewanee run at the 5:38 point when she followed through on a fast break and dropped in two points for the Petrels. Kabbes knocked in a free throw and Ginsburg picked up another short jumper in the paint to further cut into the Petrel lead, making it 26-22 Oglethorpe. But the hosts got two straight baskets from Sarah Giles to push their lead back to eight. Sewanee responded by nailing a 3-pointer and forcing an Oglethorpe turnover before Kabbes knocked down another three to make it 30-28 Petrels with just 3:15 remaining in the half. The Tigers and the Petrels traded baskets for the next three minutes before Oglethorpe took a 36-32 lead into the locker room.

The Stormy Petrels came out of the break shooting and quickly turned their four-point lead into a 14-point lead after starting the second half with a 16-8 run. Sewanee was able to cut the difference to seven after Kabbes nailed a jumper and drained two free throws and Hutson knocked down her second 3-pointer of the night to make it 54-47 Oglethorpe. The seven-point differential came at the 13:14 mark of the second period and unfortunately for the Tigers, it was as close as they would come for the rest of the contest. The Petrels opened things up with a 14-0 run to go up 68-47 before Sewanee got field goals from Elliott and Kabbes to make it 68-51. Oglethorpe finished out the contest with an 11-3 run to give the Petrels a 79-54 victory over the Tigers.

Kabbes led the Tigers with 18 points and six rebounds on 6 of 16 shooting in the game. Oglethorpe's Giles led all scorers with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Elliott added 10 for Sewanee, while Ginsburg tallied eight in the loss. Logan Miller picked up four steals on the evening as Sewanee forced the Petrels into 27 turnovers. The Tigers were able to convert the Petrel mishandles into 24 points in the effort.

As a team, Sewanee shot just 32.3% from the field and 22.9% from beyond the 3-point line. The Petrels shot 44.% on the night, including 51.5% in the second half. Oglethorpe out rebounded the Tigers 56-36 in the contest.

Sewanee will travel to Judson College on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. clash with the Eagles. Judson is 2-4 on the year after dropping a 45-89 decision to SUNO on November 18th.
