Women drop last contest of 2010 to the Panthers, 90-48

Box Score

The Sewanee women's basketball team headed back to the hardwood today after an extended holiday break, taking on the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern in an SCAC clash. The host Panthers jumped out to a 20-7 midway through the first half and never looked back, topping the Tigers 90-48. The loss drops the women to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Birmingham-Southern went ahead 4-0 in the early-goings before Sewanee's Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky) hit a short jumper to get the Tigers on the board less than two minutes in. The Panthers then went on a 12-2 run to push their lead to 14, 16-4, just over six minutes into the contest. BSC's Sam Davidson knocked down a pair of free throws after being fouled by Dee Bradford (Isle of Palms, S.C., First Baptist) to give the hosts an 18-4 lead before Tiger freshman Paige Lowe (Tullahoma, Tenn., Franklin County) nailed a 3-pointer to cut the Panther lead to 11.

After Lowe's trey, the two squads traded baskets to keep the difference at 11 near the midway mark of the first half. The 11-point difference was the closest the Tigers would get it all night. The Panthers, who shot nearly 42% in the contest, pushed the margin to 24 at the half, as they headed into the locker room with a 44-20 lead. For the half, Sewanee went just 8 of 27 from the field in the stanza, including 4 of 18 from the 3-point line.

Things didn't get any easier for the Tigers in the second half. Birmingham-Southern went up as many as 30 points just eight minutes into the period. Sewanee's first half shooting woes continued into the second, as the Tigers hit just 8 of 26 field goals in half. The Panthers went 18 of 42 in the period as they pushed their lead to 37 in the waning minutes of the game. BSC's Morgen Aston knocked down a three with 1:37 left and Elizabeth Bromirski hit a jumper with just 15 seconds left to make the final score 90-48.

Elliott led the Tigers with a game-high 17 points after a 6 of 7 performance from the field. Logan Miller (Franklin, Tenn., Christ Presbyterian) added eight points while Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne) led with eight rebounds and three blocks. As a team, the Tigers shot 30.2% from the field and 20.6% from the 3-point line in the game.

Birmingham-Southern hit nearly 42% from the field, including a 36.7% clip from the 3-point line. The Panthers held the edge in rebounds, 56 to 36. Sewanee turned the ball over 15 times, while BSC gave it up six times.

Sewanee heads to Memphis next for a Sunday SCAC match up with Rhodes College. The Lynx are 2-8 on the year after an 81-74 loss to Oglethorpe today. The Tigers dropped both of their contests to the Lynx last year, falling 100-92 on New Year's Day 2010 and 86-54 in Memphis in February.
