Tigers come up short against Eagles of Emory University

Box Score BOX SCORE

Sewanee led by as many as eight in the first half against Emory University tonight, but the Eagles proved too much, as they climbed their way back to take a 67-55 win from the Tigers. Sewanee cut it to six with just over three minutes left to play, but Emory hit their free throws down the stretch to hand the Tigers their fourth loss of the young season. Sewanee is now 1-4, while the Eagles move to 3-3 on the year.

It took nearly two minutes before someone came up with a basket in the first half, but Sewanee's Paige Lowe (Tullahoma, Tenn., Franklin County) knocked down a three-pointer at the 18:04 mark, giving the Tigers an early 3-0 lead. The Tigers and the Eagles traded baskets before Sewanee went up 7-6 on a lay up by Heather Baier (Grand Prairie, Ill., Rockord Lutheran). Sewanee went on a 7-nothing run to push their lead to 14-6 before Emory managed to tie things up with three straight baskets near the ten-minute mark.

The host Eagles took a brief two-point lead, 18-16, before Sewanee got a three from Dee Bradford (Isle of Palms, S.C., First Baptist) and a short jumper in the paint from Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne). But Emory responded, getting a basket and the follow up free throw from Crystal Goodwin, who was fouled by Sewanee's Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption), to even things at 21. The Tigers and the Eagles traded several baskets before reaching a 28-28 tie with just 3:38 left in the first half. Emory knocked in five straight points as the half closed out and headed to the locker room clinging to a 33-28 lead.

The Tigers cut the Emory lead to two right off the bat in the second half on a three-pointer by Logan Miller (Franklin, Tenn.). 21 seconds later, Alex Ginsburg (Hollywood, S.C., Pinewood Prep) drained another three for Sewanee to give the Tigers a 34-33 lead. Emory followed Ginsburg's three with a basket from Danielle Landry to take back the lead, 35-34. But Elliott hit one of two free throws for the Tigers to even things up again. After Elliott knotted the score at 35-apiece, Hannah Lilly knocked down a three, as the Eagles took a 38-35 lead just over six minutes into the half.

Sewanee and Emory traded several baskets before the Tigers hit back-to-back threes, one by Ginsburg and one by Elliott to cut the Emory lead to one, 43-44, with ten minutes remaining. After a short jumper from Landry was good for the Eagles, Sewanee got another basket from beyond the three-point arc, this time from Bradford, to tie things up at 46-46.

But the Eagles found their touch and went on a 10-0 run, holding the Tigers scoreless for over three minutes, to take a 56-46 lead with just over six minutes left in the ballgame. Miller nailed a trey for Sewanee to cut the Emory lead to seven, but the Eagles responded with a basket of their own to push the lead back to nine. Sewanee got another three-pointer, this one from Clarissa Medley (LaFollette, Tenn., J. Frank White Academy), to chop the lead to six, but the Eagles got back-to-back buckets, grabbing an 11-point lead, their largest lead of the night at that point. The Tigers got a fast break lay in and a free throw from Elliott in the waning minutes, but it wasn't enough, as Emory took home a 67-55 victory over Sewanee.

Bradford tallied 12 points to lead the Tigers, while Ginsburg came up 11. Emory's Lilly led all scorers with 14 points. Miller tossed in nine points and Elliott came up with seven for Sewanee as well. Kabbes led all players with 13 rebounds in the contest, ten of which came on the defensive end of the court. Ginsburg pulled down nine rebounds.

Sewanee went 21 of 59 from the field in the contest, good for a 35.6% clip. Emory shot just slightly better, going 28 of 74 for a 37.8% shooting night. Turnovers were the story of the ballgame, as the two teams combined for 63 turnovers. Sewanee owned 37 of those mishandles, while Emory chipped in 26 of their own.

Sewanee will be back in action on Saturday, when they head back to Atlanta to open up SCAC play against Oglethorpe University. The Stormy Petrels are 0-4 on the year after dropping a 67-44 contest to Piedmont on November 23rd. Oglethorpe won both match ups with the Tigers last year, including a thrilling 63-61 victory in the Tigers' final contest of the season.
