Despite being down as many as 13 in the first half, the Agnes Scott Scotties slowly crawled their way back into the contest before downing Sewanee, 87-80, in women's basketball action tonight. The host Tigers, who got 19 points from Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne) and 18 from Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption), fall to 1-3 on the young season, while the Scotties move to 3-1 on the year.
The Tigers got on the board quickly in the contest, after Dee Bradford (Isle of Palms, S.C., First Baptist) nailed a three-pointer just one minute in. Agnes Scott countered with a three of their own, theirs coming from Lexi Pulice-Farrow, to make it 3-3 early on. Sewanee upped their lead to four a few minutes later, behind a short jumper by Alex Ginsburg (Hollywood, S.C., Pinewood Prep) and a pair of free throws from Elliott. The Scotties took a brief 8-7 lead after Arielle Register nailed a three and Katie Durrence knocked down a jumper. But the Tigers responded with a field goal from Kabbes to take back the lead, 9-8.
Sewanee then put together twelve straight points to extend their lead to 21-8. The Tigers went on a 12-0 run that included a trey from Kabbes, a pair of free throws from Heather Baier (Grand Prairie, Ill., Rockord Lutheran), and field goals from Elliott, Ginsburg, and Kabbes. The Scotties cut the lead to six after back-to-back lay ups and a three pointer from Durrence were all good. The two squads traded scores for the next five minutes, including two three-pointers from Kali Hutson (Winchester, Tenn., Franklin County), before a short jumper from Genefine Sapateh cut the Tiger lead to 33-28 with 5:30 remaining in the half.
Sewanee pushed their lead back to seven, 39-32, with the help of three pointers from Paige Lowe (Tullahoma, Tenn., Franklin County) and Elliott, before the Scotties tossed in two free throws and three field goals to cut it to a one-point margin. After Agnes Scott cut it to 41-40, Sewanee got another three from Lowe to push their lead back to four. With just 21 seconds left in the half, Kabbes fouled Register, who knocked down one of two from the charity stripe to make it 44-42 as the half came to an end.
Agnes Scott picked up their second lead of the game, and the first since they held a one point lead just over three minutes into the first half, when Tiffany Jones knocked down a three pointer at the 19:55 mark to open up the stanza. The Scotties pushed their lead to four, 44-48, a minute later when Jones knocked down her second trey in a row. The Tigers picked up a pair of free throws from Kabbes to cut the lead visitor lead to just two, but Agnes Scott would extend their lead to seven just two minutes later, making it 47-54 Scotties.
After the Scotties took the seven-point lead, the Tigers clawed their way to within one, 55-56, after lay ups by Kabbes, Bradford, and Michelle Thibodeaux (Decatur, Ga., Academe of the Oaks). Sewanee regained the lead 20 seconds later on a short jumper from Baier. Baier's field goal made it 57-56 and Sewanee would go up 61-58 just a minute later on a field goal by Kabbes but that was nearly the end of the Tigers' lead. Agnes Scott went on a 12-4 run after Kabbes' field goal to make it 65-70 with just under eight minutes remaining and the Scotties never looked back, as they picked up the 87-80 victory over Sewanee.
Kabbes recorded 19 points for the Tigers, while Elliott pitched in 18 in the effort. Durrence led all scorers with 27 points. Kabbes also led the Tigers in rebounding, pulling down seven boards in the contest. Baier added six boards. Kimberly Reeves tallied 16 rebounds for the visitors and Sapateh added 15, as the Scots out-rebounded the Tigers 64-39 in the contest.
Sewanee went 25 of 71 in the contest, shooting just over 35% in the game, while Agnes Scott knocked down just over 40% of their shots, going 33 of 81. The Tigers were 22 of 33 from the free throw line and eight of 30 from beyond the arc.
The Tigers have a week off before traveling to Emory University on November 30th for a rematch with the Eagles at 6:00 p.m. Emory topped Sewanee over the weekend 129-82.
