Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne) recorded her second straight double-double for the Tigers tonight, as Sewanee dropped a 129-82 decision to the Emory Eagles in the first round of the Emory Tip-Off Tournament. The Eagles jumped out to a commanding 65-39 lead at halftime and it was just too much for Sewanee to overcome as the Tigers fell to 1-1 in the young 2010-11 campaign. Emory moves to 2-0 with the win and will play the College of Saint Benedict in the championship game tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. Sewanee will battle it out with the Lions of Piedmont College at 4:00 p.m. in the consolation game. Piedmont fell to Saint Benedict 78-54 in the first game of the tournament.
Emory jumped out to a 16-2 lead just five minutes in after a 14-0 run. Eagle Becca Feldman led Emory to the quick lead with six quick points. Sewanee didn't stay down for long though, and managed to claw their way back within four with just over ten minutes to go in the half. But shortly after Sewanee's run, Emory pieced together another 14 point run to extend their lead to 16 and the Eagles never looked back after that.
Emory freshman Hannah Lilly led all scorers with 22 points Kabbes led the Tigers with 19 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double performance in as many games this season. Heather Baier (Grand Prairie, Ill., Rockord Lutheran) added 15 points for Sewanee, while Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption) added ten.
