BOX SCORE

It was a freshman who stole the show on senior night, as two first-half goals from freshman Allie White (Athens, Ga., Oconee County) lifted the Sewanee women's soccer team over visiting Rhodes College, 2-1. The win moves the Tigers to 8-5 on the season and 2-3 in SCAC play. Rhodes drops to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

On a chilly Friday night and in a rivalry-fueled SCAC match up, both the Tigers and the Lynx came out fighting. Sewanee out shot the Lynx 12 to six in the first half but the visitors managed to get on the board first. Rhodes' Alice Hilgart took a free kick and placed it perfectly in the goal, just over Sewanee keeper Virginia Zakas (Atlanta, Ga., Westminster)' outstretched hands and into the back of the net. Hilgart's score made it 1-0 Rhodes just 7:51 minutes into the contest, but the score wouldn't stand for long.

Less than three minutes later, White got the Tigers on the board with her first goal of the night. The Tigers earned a corner kick, which sophomore Bess Goodman (Greensboro, N.C., Grimsley) took. Goodman placed a pass right to White's feet and White connected, putting her shot past Rhodes goalkeeper Stephanie Sermonet and tying the game at one apiece.

White and the Tigers didn't stay quiet for long. With 24 minutes left in the first half, several Tigers crowded around the goal as senior Fritsl Butler (Chattanooga, Tenn., Baylor School) took a shot. Butler's shot bounced off the post and White connected with the rebound, putting it in the net and putting Sewanee ahead 2-1. The Tigers' defense remained strong throughout the rest of the half and Sewanee headed into the locker room holding on to the lead.

The pace was quick in the second half and the Tigers and Lynx battled back and forth throughout the entire period. Both teams had several opportunities but just couldn't capitalize. Junior Kabler Colhoun (Winston-Salem, N.C., Mount Tabor) created several chances for the Tigers, including earning a crucial corner kick with just nine minutes left in the contest, but Sewanee just couldn't catch a break. It didn't matter though, as the Tiger defense held on for the period and Sewanee walked away with the 2-1 victory.

Sewanee held the advantage in shots, 19 to 11 and the Tigers led in corners five to zero. The Tigers take their momentum into another SCAC match on Sunday. Sewanee will play host to visiting Hendrix College at noon. The Warriors at 1-9-1 on the season and 0-5-1 in conference play. The Warriors played to a 0-0 tie with Oglethorpe this afternoon.
