SEWANEE, Tenn. 3/29/09 – Trailing 9-6 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Sewanee Tigers rallied for four runs to upend the DePauw Tigers 10-9 and salvage a win in the final game of the three-game SCAC baseball series played this weekend at Montgomery Field.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, freshman Taylor Barrett (Murfreesboro, Tenn., Siegel) singled home Mac McCallum (Rockville, Md., St. Andrew's) with the winning run.
Sewanee got on the board first by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The two teams exchanged the lead several times and there were several ties in the game leading up to the ninth inning.
DePauw held a 7-6 lead entering the ninth inning, but scored two runs in the top half of the inning to take a 9-6 lead.
That set the stage for the dramatic ninth inning. After tying the score at 9-9 on singles by Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy), Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) and Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) and two costly errors by DePauw, the stage was set for Barrett's heroics. With two outs Barrett drove a single to left chasing home McCallum who had reached on a fielder's choice giving Sewanee the 10-9 victory.
Barrett led Sewanee at the plate going 4-for-6 on the day. Mauro chipped in three hits and Pogue had two for Sewanee. McCallum and Mauro each picked up two RBI.
Andrew Rowan (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) was the credited with the win in relief on the mound. Rowan pitched one inning giving up no earned runs and one hit. Starting pitcher Logan Ray (Estill Springs, Tenn., Franklin County) went 7.2 innings.
With the win Sewanee raised its overall record to 7-13 and 1-5 in conference play. DePauw fell to 13-9 and 4-2 in the SCAC.
Sewanee will return to action on Saturday in Danville, Ky. with a doubleheader against Centre College. The two teams will wrap up the three-game SCAC series with a single game on Sunday.
