2009 Baseball: Piedmont Stops Sewanee with a Pair of Fifth Inning Dingers

BOX SCORE

DEMOREST, Ga. – Sewanee opened its 2009 baseball season at Piedmont this afternoon and the game was locked at one apiece until the fifth inning until the host Lions jacked a pair of homeruns to take the lead they would increase to 9-2 for the final tally in the Piedmont win.

Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) and Trey Axe (Austin, Texas, St. Andrew's) led Sewanee's offensive effort with a double and a single each. Pogue also got one of Sewanee's RBIs, along with newcomer Thomas Pillow (Ripley, N.C., Ripley). Junior hurler Greg Bartleski (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant) took the loss on the mound for the Tigers and Spencer Shelton earned the win for Piedmont.

Sewanee falls to 0-1 and Scott Baker's Tigers will play Piedmont again tomorrow afternoon. Baker has 102 wins at Sewanee, just four shy of the all-time Sewanee record, which is held by legendary coach Shirley Majors (106 wins).
