SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee hosted Birmingham-Southern Friday night and fell 62-53 to the visiting Panthers after trailing 29-19 at the half. Sewanee went on a 5-0 run to start the second, but the rally was stopped short and the Tigers fell by nine.
Friday night, both teams celebrated the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Pink Zone. The WBCA Pink Zone™ initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Donations were accepted at the door and all Tiger fans were encouraged to wear pink to the game. Donations collected in Sewanee benefit the Multi-County Cancer Support Network, which serves Bedford, Coffee, Franklin, Grundy, Lincoln, Marion, Moore and Warren Counties.
Sophomore Carla Smiley (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) led Sewanee's effort with 18 points, which included five three-pointers. Katelyn Wilson Led the Panthers with 14 points. BSC was 39% good from the line and Sewanee hit 30% of its field goals. 'Southern out-rebounded Sewanee 43-36, also.
Sewanee falls to 4-17 and will host Rhodes on Sunday for Senior Day. Birmingham-Southern is 14-9 and will play at Oglethorpe on Sunday.
