SEWANEE, Tenn. – With several key
starters out with injury, the Sewanee men's basketball
freshmen stood out Saturday as the Tigers topped Covenant 57-50
after trailing 23-22 at the half. The lead changed hands 12 times
in the struggle, but Sewanee came out on top with the seven-point
win.
Newcomer Lewis Affronti (Virginia Beach,
Va., Norfolk Academy) led Sewanee's scoring with 14,
while fellow freshman Tyler Brown (Goodlettsville, Tenn.,
Beech) led with 12 rebounds. Defensively, freshman
Andrew Little (Charlotte, N. C., Southlake Christian)
had four steals on the day. Junior Garrett Hollingsworth
(Roanoke, Va., North Cross) also logged double-digit scoring
with 11 points and sophomoreSam Martin (Ringgold, Ga.,
Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe) had two blocks on the day. Sam
Bowman led Covenant's charge with 17 total points.
As a team, Sewanee only shot 22% from the
field in the first half, but improved its second half field goal
percentage to 35. Covenant was 31% accurate from the field. Each
team had 52 total rebounds.
Sewanee is now 1-0 and will host LaGrange
Tuesday night at 7 pm in Juhan Gym. The Tigers will open SCAC
league play when they host travel partner Oglethorpe December 5.
Covenant is now 0-3.
