SEWANEE, Tenn. – After falling behind 34-24 to visiting
Centre at halftime on Friday night, the Sewanee women's
basketball Tigers rallied in the second period, tying the game at
50 apiece with 15 seconds in regulation. Centre went up 52-50 with
eight seconds and Carla Smiley's (Nashville, Tenn., Father
Ryan) buzzer-beating three-pointer couldn't find its
home in the net. The Colonels took the two point win to the locker
room at the end of play.
Carla Smiley led Sewanee's effort with 19 points
in the contest, taking her season average to 11.4 points per game.
Fellow sophomore Lauren Gulley (Winchester, Tenn., Franklin
County) was also in double digits for Sewanee with 10 points.
Freshman Linsie Wiesman (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan)
led Sewanee with seven rebounds. For Centre, Chelsea Goodman led
with 24 points and six rebounds.
Sewanee was 35.7% good from the field, while Centre was 40%
accurate with its field goals. The Tigers were 5-19 from behind the
three-point line, while Centre was 4-16.
Sewanee falls to 0-5 and is 0-1 in the SCAC. Centre is 4-2 and is
1-0 in the league. Sewane will host DePauw in more SCAC action
Sunday afternoon, while Centre will travel to Oglethorpe.
