ATLANTA – Sewanee opened its 2008-09 season at Emory Sunday night and the Eagles jumped out to an early lead on the Tigers, taking the game into the locker rooms at halftime with a 34-22 lead. Emory went on to earn the eventual 71-46 DIII women's basketball victory.
Emory led 34-22 at the half. In the first, Sewanee's
Jamie Robinson (Ft. Worth, Texas, Ft. Worth Country Day) led the Tiger effort with seven points.
Carla Smiley (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) had six. LeShond Lillard had seven first half points for Emory.
In the second half, Sewanee came out shooting and cut the Eagle lead to six midway through the period. Emory recovered, though, and finished Sewanee off for the 25-point win. Sophomore
Carla Smiley was Sewanee's leading scorer and Lora Turner led Emory with 12 points.
Sewanee was 14-58 from the field (24.1%) and Emory was good for 43.1% of its field goals. Each team sunk five three-pointers and logged 22 turnovers. Emory cleaned up the glass with 45 rebounds, while Sewanee had 34 rebounds.
Sewanee falls to 0-1 and will travel to Johns Hopkins next weekend for the Mike Dugall Memorial, where the Tigers will open with a tip-off against the host Blue Jays at 1 pm EST. Emory is now 1-0 so far this season.
