Doyle, Prieto tie for second, Tigers sit in first after first round of Whitworth Golf Invitational

SEWANEE, Tenn. – James Doyle and Drew Prieto both shot three-under 69 and are tied for second individually, as the Sewanee men's golf team sits in first place after the opening round of the Whitworth Golf Invitational on Saturday at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington.

Doyle opened with a par before a double-bogey on hole two, but responded with three consecutive birdies. The freshman added a par, bogey, par and birdie to close out the front nine one-under. The Charlotte, N.C., native opened the back nine with three straight birdies before adding five pars and a bogey on hole 18 to finish with a three-under 69.

Prieto carded a bogey on hole one before adding three consecutive birdies on holes two through four. The freshman added a par and bogey before closing out the front nine with three straight pars. On the back nine, Prieto carded five pars and three birdies before a bogey on the final hole of the day to finish with a three-under 69.

Niel Phillips finished tied for ninth with a one-over 73. The New Orleans, La., native opened with four straight pars before adding a birdie on hole five and another par. Phillips carded a double-bogey on hole seven, followed by a birdie on eight and a bogey on nine to finish the front nine one-over. He added two consecutive bogeys to start the back nine before posting five pars and two birdies.

Logan Johnson finished tied for 11th with a two-over 74. The senior opened with a double-bogey on hole one and added six pars, a birdie and a bogey on the front nine. On the back nine, Johnson carded seven pars, a birdie and a bogey.

Jackson Lively finished tied for 16th with a four-over 76. He opened with a bogey on hole one and added two more bogeys and six pars on the front nine. On the back nine, Lively carded two bogeys, a birdie and six pars.

The Tigers sit in first place after the opening round with a three-under 285, nine strokes ahead of Linfield in second place.
